I don’t feel compelled to post about every Lucite sculpture that comes along, but this one is something special.  Here is a sculpture in acrylic and other elements signed “Joslin 65”.  It is multi-colored and contains reflective surfaces, and is that the lens from one of those lights you see on a traffic barrel inside the sculpture?

The sculpture is 16” by 10” by 6-1/2” including the base.  Perhaps most telling about this piece is the interest it generated.  There were 16 bidders who placed 27 bids.  The winning bid was $405.00.

David Douglas was a prolific designer of kitchenware and dinnerware.  He was responsible for numerous carafes, bread trays, butter dishes, and even a “lighted beverage glass,” which he patented in 1975.  Along with sleek, cool, midcentury styling comes a retro price tag on these carafes.  Shipping often costs more than the item.  They can be easily purchased in the $10 range.

Accalac texture

The carafe is made of Accalac, which was made to ‘feel and look like wood, yet wear like iron.’  According to the trademark registration, Accalac is a “plastic material made into tableware.”  Above:  Accalac texture.

Accalac registered trademark

A U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for Accalac by David Douglas & Co., Inc. on July 26, 1967.

I Dream of Jeannie bottle from intro

The bottle from the opening of some episodes of the first season of I Dream of Jeannie. The show ran from September, 1965 to May, 1970. The genie had hit pop culture around the time the David Douglas Therm Ware carafe was designed and entered production.

The centerpiece of the Therm Ware collection, the carafe, looks like a genie bottle.  The “Genie server ” is part of a suite of products, including tumblers, coffee cups, and the like, all marketed under the Therm Ware umbrella.

The carafe features a body that is made of slightly textured Accalac plastic (see detail above), topped with a 3/8” band of smooth plastic, and a stopper.  At it’s widest point, the carafe has a circumference of 24-3/16”.  The carafe stands 11” tall and an extra 1” if the cap is in place.

While the band encircling the top of the carafe is usually white, I have seen a black band on a white carafe. The stoppers are interchangeable, so they can be switched freely between carafes. The top of the cap on some carafes have a screened design, the caps on some carafes don’t.

Finding the Minicube alarm clock by Seth Thomas in yellow prompted me to find out what other colors this little gem was released in, and to seek out retro cube clocks in general.  A great variety were made.

The Minicube cube alarm clock is given the model designation E043-000.  Seth Thomas is a division of General Time, a Talley Industries Company.  Click for a brief history of Seth Thomas.  The clock is approximately 3-3/4” on a side. It operates on AC and must be plugged in, it is not battery operated.  These clocks are relatively common and can be purchased for under $30.

Back of Minicube alarm clock

On the back of the clock there is a metal pull that engages the alarm. A wheel is pushed and turned to set the alarm and pulled and turned to set the time.

One of the interesting aspects of the Minicube clock is its marketing by different companies in different countries.  The Seth Thomas version is identical structurally to the Westclox version.  The Seth Thomas Minicube on the left is marked “MADE IN U.S.A.” on the bottom of the face.  The Westclox Minicube on the right is marked “MADE IN CANADA”

Seth Thomas Minicube alarm clock "MADE IN U.S.A."

Westclox Minicube alarm clock "MADE IN CANADA"

How could this be?  Well, Westclox and Seth Thomas were both under the same corporate umbrella.  The first Westclox factory outside the United States opened in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada in 1920 and by 1923 a new factory opened.  In 1930, Western Clock Company was merged with Seth Thomas Clock Company as “General Time Corporation,” and in 1936 it was renamed the Westclox Division of General Time Corp. Expansions to the Peterborough facility were made through the 1950s as business grew.  In 1968, General Time was acquired by Talley Industries.

Mini-Light alarm clock, model 0507-000 | Seth Thomas, General Time | ca. 1970

$

In researching cube clocks like the Minicube alarm clock, I also encountered the Mini-Light alarm clock.  It is similar in design to the Minicube.  In fact, it has the same back.  The position of the screws are identical, as are the controls for setting the alarm and the time.  Like the Minicube, the Mini-Light operates on AC and must be plugged in, it is not battery operated. The difference is in the face of the clock.  The Mini-Light cube alarm clock is given the model designation 0507-000.

On the Mini-Light, there is a transparent square face that covers the dial and the hands.  This face is screened in such a way to leave an open circle.  Large graphic numerals are also screened and the “Seth Thomas” name is added between the center of the clock and the 3.  The dial is backlit.  The Mini-Light alarm clock is relatively common and can be purchased for under $30.  Just make sure to get one that doesn’t have a scratched up face.

Seth Thomas Mini-Light alarm clock, night view

During the day, the clock is easy to read.  During the night, the hands and numbers are silhouetted against the backlight, so the clock remains easy to read!

The following table lists the case colors and catalog numbers of the Seth Thomas Mini-Light alarm clocks I have found. It does not include any of the special variants.  The color of the screened numerals on the transparent plastic face is the same as the case except for the white case, which is screened in black.  If you know of any other color combinations, please comment below!

Dorothee Maurer-Becker UTEN.SILO IDorothee Maurer-Becker
Design M, Munich, West Germany, 1969

Dorothee Maurer-Becker was born 1938 in Aschaffenburg, Germany.  She studied languages in Frankfurt and Munich. After living for a time in London and Paris, she moved to California in 1960. She returned to Germany in 1963 with her husband, renowned lighting designer Ingo Maurer.  Three years later, they established Design M, a Munich based design and manufacturing company.  Dorothee Maurer-Becker never trained as an artist or designer, yet created one of the most iconic and recognizable plastic designs from the 1960s:  The UTEN.SILO, or as it was often called in the United States, the Wall-All.

Design M Ingo Maurer trademark registration

Design M Ingo Maurer trademark registration, from 1979. For lamps, first use was August, 1967 and first use in commerce was June 3, 1969.  For “furniture – namely, wall units and racks having containers and receptacles for holding household and miscellaneous articles,” first use was February, 1968 and first use in commerce was July 3, 1970.

Dorothee Maurer-Becker cites two primary inspirations for the UTEN.SILO design.  One was a toy of her prior design, the other was a storage item she recalls from her childhood.

“In 1968, fired by the spirit of the 1968 movement, I designed a wooden toy consisting of a large piece of wood with geometrically shaped notches and matching elements. The aim was for children to develop a feeling for the characteristics of geometric shapes in play. But my own children were not really interested in the toy.”
The dimensions of the game and some of its geometric shapes were later repeated in UTEN.SILO.
“My father owned a drugstore and photo shop in Aschaffenburg. When I was a child there were countless drawers there full of fascinating things waiting to be discovered, including a hang-up toilet bag made of waxed cloth full of pockets for the various toiletries. The bag held items which would normally have been stored vertically in a horizontal position. I never forgot this practical idea and later used it in UTEN.SILO.”
After a prototype was presented at the Frankfurt Fair in early 1969, Ingo Maurer decided to go into production and invested DM 250,000 in a metal injection mold weighing over three tons. Based on the exchange rate between the Deutschmark and the U.S. dollar at the time, the investment represented over $60,000, equivalent to more than $375,000 today (2013).

Reverse side of the UTEN.SILO I.

The front of UTEN.SILO was manufactured out of ABS plastic by the Dynamit Nobel company in Weissenburg, West Germany by injection molding.  At first glance it seems to be made of many parts but it is, in fact, a single piece.  Nine metal hooks and a clip were then hand-mounted, before it was stuck onto the reverse side.  The UTEN.SILO is attached to the wall through holes at each of the four corners of the piece.

Left: Nine metal hooks.  Right: Clip.

The first UTEN.SILO units went on the market in December, 1969 and over the following years were an overwhelming success, particularly in Europe and on the United States market, where they sold under the name “Wall-All.”  The oil crisis intervened and placed pressures on the plastics industry. Consumers interested in design began to direct their attention to wood and other natural materials. Production of UTEN.SILO I was halted in 1974 and UTEN.SILO II, a smaller version manufactured starting in 1970, was discontinued a few years later.

This post is going to come in three parts, since there are three separate wall organizers designed by Dorothee Maurer-Becker that are to be presented.  These are the UTEN.SILO I (this post) and the UTEN.SILO II, both by Design M in Munich, West Germany, and the Wall-All III, by Format Sales in the United States.

Each of the organizers has its own unique variety of containers, holders, hooks, and clips that can be used to efficiently organize a kitchen, workshop, bathroom, office, or other room.  The UTEN.SILO is essentially a junk drawer you put on your wall.  It is an interesting object in that empty it is stark and cold, yet when serving its purpose, the colors and textures of the contents of the UTEN.SILO make it vibrate with energy.

Here is a Krups Electronic wall clock in blue.  These clocks have a great retro feel but would easily be at home amongst contemporary décor.  It is a timeless elegance considering they are now forty years old.  Consider them an easy way to get a pop of color into a room.  This blue clock is identical to the green and red Krups battery operated wall clocks I have previously posted about.

blue Krups Electronic wall clock

The face of the clock is graced with a modern, bold- colored graphic set against metallic hands.  Split white stylized circles serve as the 12, 3, 6, and 9. The line that divides the circle is repeated to designate the other positions on the clock face but in positive instead of negative.  I hadn’t noticed it before but the circles look like scored pills! The face of the clock is protected by a transparent plastic covering.  The clock is stamped ‘12 73’ on the back, dating it to December, 1973.
